Project One-liner

Developing an emotion diary web-app for parents who strive to understand their child(ren)'s behavior, the emotion underneath and the parent(s)'s emotion.

Project Background (Why you built this)

As my children reach preschool age and older, emotional and mental interaction began to matter more in parenting. But at times when I am tired and in bad mood, I found myself less tolerant to my child's behavior and responding inconsistently. Unsure of the rightness of my reaction at that very moment, I often spent the nighttime in regret, searching for expert tips on YouTube to not repeat the mistake. But I realized that understanding my and my child's emotion and the reactions in certain situation through record-keeping should come first.

Implementation Goal (Core Feature)

Creating emotion diary using friendly character and easy visualization, supporting a user to keep creating.
Display the emotion in calendar format to show accumulation of data.
Categorize emotion diaries to show which particular emotion comes out in particular situation and prepare the user.

Created PRD (complete)
Building the first screen of MVP using Antigravity (complete)

1–2 Key Features

In \"Diary\" page where user can create diary, the screen shows two Chestnut characters, two sets of drop-downs and textboxes. Users can choose an emotion label from the drop-down and write the background in the text box.
When emotion diaries are created they appear on the \"Calendar\" page in colored icons.
\"My story\" page shows past emotion diaries and categorizes using emotion filters.

1. Service Purpose (Why)

Core problem : As children reach preschool age and older, emotional and affective factors increasingly drive interactions and discipline. But tired parents sometimes respond inconsistently to a child's behavior depending on their mood and emotional state that day. Unsure of the rightness of the reaction at that very moment, parents frequently regret their reactions and reflect on them only after the child's bedtime.
Pain point: The first step should be to understand parents own behavioral patterns themselves and the child’s behavioral patterns. But with the lack of data-driven self-reflection, we are prone to seek solutions via scattered expert videos (e.g., YouTube) and ad-hoc advice, which may work for a short while but doesn’t build consistent, personalized tactics of parenting.

Service Purpose (Why this service):
This project is to provide a personalized data-informed companion that tracks caregiver and child emotional/behavioral patterns in a form of emotion diary in calendar. The ultimate goal is enabling parents to respond to children with consistency and calm.

2. Target Users (Who)

Primary users: Caregivers of children aged preschool and older who want to record their day, specifically an event with a child and the child's and their reactions, and reflect on themselves. Adults who take parenthood seriously and with weight, and who sometimes feel overwhelmed by the responsibilities of being a parent.
IT proficiency: Beginner (smartphone + basic PC usage)
Usage environment: Mobile-first (PC supported)

3. Core Features (What)

There are two chestnut characters- Big Chestnut and Little Chestnut. Use the SVG file attached to create the characters.
In \"Diary\" page where user can create diary, the screen shows the Big Chestnut character with shadow for a hovering effect and a dropdown with UX text.
The UX text says \"Please select one emotion that best represents your feelings associated with the diary event.\"
The dropdown has colored emotion label to choose from. The emotion tags have parent tag and child tag. Refer to the table below for the colors and label. When a color is selected, the Big Chestnut character is filled with that color.

In Calendar page, a monthly calendar displays Big Chestnut icons in selected colors for the dates emotion diaries are created. The calendar dose not show Little Chestnut's emotion colors.
If there is more than one emotion diary created on the same day, Big Chestnut icon on the calendar is in rainbow gradient color.
In \"My Story\" page, scroll through all posts in chronological order. Categorize by two different filters - Mom Chestnut and Little Chestnut. Each filters have Positive, Negative, Contextual categories in the parent tag.

4. Page Structure (Pages)

Page 1: Create(Main) — New emotion diary creation form
Page 2: Calendar — Show Big Chestnut's emotion diaries in colored character on monthly calendar
Page 3: My Story — Scroll through all diaries in card layout feed in chronological order + filter by emotion category filter

5. Design Requirements

Overall tone & manner: Simple yet warm and friendliness with line drawings and simple forms. Card layout and calendar layout.
Main colors: Fluffy Butter (#F5F1DD), Pastel Peach (#FADEC3), Sweet Red (#F29696)
Mobile responsive: Yes (mobile-first design)
Reference: calendar layout and usage of color characters of MOODA app, Moodie app by CASOFT, My Veggie Diary by Watta. Gratitude Garden: Journal by Maysnow for create post layout.

6. Success Criteria

New diary form has two sets of color selection dropdown and text input, and one create button.
After creation, emotion diary cards show two colored Chestnut characters and text.
In Calendar page colored Chestnut icons appear for the date where diary input was created.
Clicking a category tag filters to show only emotion diaries with the selected emotion tag.

Troubleshooting (Problem-solving process)

The number of core features looked to many, so I asked Antigravity that I will add detail for Calendar and My Story pages, and only gave until #7 of the core features in PRD. After Adding the details, the result was more or less similar to what I expected but needed much to improve in terms of UI design.
